After surviving 12 documented hours spanning 25 seperate phone calls, 6 seperate supervisors failing to return promised follow-up calls (for this issue and many others), reformatting my harddrive and reinstalling windows twice (for seperate issues), I finally convinced Dell my computer had a problem and they agreed to send me an upgraded new computer for my troubles.

I contacted Sigma Tel Audio who manufactures the driver and they said all they were responsible for was the design, and to contact the computer manufacturer.
I was unable to access any kind of microphone or line volume contols through the control panel, nor was able to add the microphone volume controls for the playback through the properties option on the volume control panel. I did not want to record my voice, I wanted the ability to make phone calls, specifically for when I was on hold or long phone calls (as with Dell Tech Support).
The microphone was not defective as it worked with the voice recorder and passed all the hardware tests. I called Dell Tech Support as the computer was still under warranty, and performed numerous diagnostics, etc. One problem was the external microphone I bought did not work for voice playback and more specifically Microsoft Dialer. I think that my model option for the module is not the right one.I had an Inspiron 5160 that had numerous problems. I tried all you told me, but still not working.

If you're missing the stuff I'm talking about you should have a look at "preferences" and activate everything there is until you found out how to use your mic. In the "recording" tab unmute capture and capture1 and check the "toggle recording from capture. One idea is not to choose "digital" under options→input source. It can also record some mp3 playing, when I turn off my speakers it's not recording anymore - that would suggest that the input is from the speakers. And I would say that it records from an internal mic, but since I can't hear me speaking. There are two jacks on a side of my computer - Mic/Line-in and headphones. The thing is that I'm working on how to configure an EXTERNAL microphone - that can be plugged into a Mic jack. I hava a Dell XPS M2010, it has an integrated microphone (I suppose it is built in a webcam that is on the top of a screen). Since a month or so, I'm trying to get a microphone to work in my system.
